Job description

The Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, in association with Keble College, intends to appoint a Departmental Lecturer and Fixed-Term Fellow in Philosophy to cover the teaching and other duties of the permanent postholder during his secondment as Director of Research and Innovation at the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The successful candidate will also be a Fellow of the College and a member of its Governing Body. This post is tenable from 1 October 2018 to 30 September 2022.

The person appointed will be required to deliver one course of 8 lectures, or 8 graduate classes, per academic year.  In addition they will be expected to take part in the setting and marking of undergraduate examinations and in BPhil marking.  They may also take on other Faculty duties under the direction of the Chair of the Philosophy Faculty Board.

For the college, the successful candidate will be expected to provide up to eight hours of tutorial teaching per week, averaged over the three terms.  The Fellow may choose to teach any of the Philosophy papers on offer either for the First Public Examination or for the Final Honours School in the three joint schools to which Keble admits, namely Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), Philosophy and Theology, and Philosophy and Modern Languages. However, the ability to teach at least some of the following is essential, and to teach all of them desirable: Introduction to Philosophy: Mill’s Utilitarianism; Introduction to Philosophy: General Philosophy; Introduction to Philosophy: Formal Logic; 101 Early Modern Philosophy; 102 Knowledge and Reality; 103 Ethics; 107 Philosophy of Religion.

The successful candidate should normally have received the degree of PhD or DPhil by 1 October 2018, or at least have submitted a completed doctoral dissertation for examination by that date.

Candidates must have an outstanding research record appropriate to the stage of their career with evidence of, or evidence of potential for producing, significant research in the area of Philosophy. While not essential, it is highly desirable that the successful candidate’s Area(s) of Specialization include Ethics. She or he must provide evidence of the ability to provide excellent teaching in the field and must have the ability and willingness to assume pastoral responsibilities associated with undergraduate and graduate teaching, and to act as an assessor at graduate and undergraduate level.

The person appointed will be provided with office space in Keble College.
