Job description

The Humanities and Social Change Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for the position of postdoctoral scholar for the academic year 2018-2019.

The Postdoctoral Scholar appointment is a full-time training program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the mentorship of a faculty member. The postdoctoral scholar will work under the guidance of the Center's Director and Steering Committee members on advancing the scholar's individual research and publication agenda while their own work contributes to the Center's collective inquiry into the epistemological and moral force of human affections. Duties include: focused work on the scholar's current research project(s); active participation in the Center's year-long, bi-weekly seminar; the research and completion during the academic year of a chapter-length essay (or other comparable creative project) directly on the year's theme; and the teaching of two undergraduate courses during the academic year.

We seek applicants from all fields in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences whose work contributes to our understanding of the epistemological and moral force of affective life in its varied range today (from resentment and rage, paranoia, anxiety, and despair; through addiction and distraction, boredom, indifference, greed and negligence; to trust, hope, care, and love). Through our year's work, we will seek to elucidate the roles that mood, sensibility, feeling, and other affective dispositions can play in shaping knowledge or belief about the true and the good; and we aim to examine the common tension or disjunction between such knowledge or belief and the lives we lead in practice. The Center is especially interested in the latter problem insofar as it relates to questions of inter-generational responsibility and care for future generations. For more information, please visit http://www.religion.ucsb.edu/hsc/fellowships/

The postdoctoral scholar is a one-year appointment beginning October 1, 2018 with the possibility of renewal. Salary is based on UC salary scales and candidate qualifications. A PhD granted from an accredited university within the last five academic years is required. The Postdoctoral scholar is required to be in residence for the entirety of the Center's 2018-2019 program. The Center is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.

Primary consideration will be given to applications submitted by May 11, 2018, but all applications will be considered until the position is filled. Applications should be submitted to http://apptrkr.com/1215525 and should include:

—Cover letter summarizing the applicant's intellectual interests, scholarly training and their relevance to our year's theme

—CV

—Project proposal: brief (750 word maximum) but precise summary of a chapter-length written project (or, if appropriate, art, film, or other creative project) on our year's theme, to be researched and brought to completion by the applicant during the 2018-2019 academic year.

—A minimum of two letters of recommendation; a maximum of five. Letters are to be submitted by writers directly to the UC Recruit system.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
