Job description


The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) is calling for letters of interest to serve as the Free Speech and Open Inquiry (FSOI) Post-doctoral Research Fellow for 2018-19 (beginning September 1, 2018 and ending no later than August 30, 2019). The FSOI Post-doctoral Research Fellow will support a growing community of university scholars across the country in advancing a better understanding of the principles of free speech and the challenges maintaining a culture of open inquiry in American higher education.

The FSOI Post-doctoral Research Fellow will work closely with IHS leadership to contribute thought leadership, in the form of scholarly essays, writing for popular media outlets, and editing, on topics related to campus speech. The FSOI Post-doctoral Research Fellow will work closely with IHS's president and the community of scholars affiliated with IHS who conduct related research.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the IHS President, the Faculty Relations team, the Communications & Marketing team and other senior leaders to craft an FSOI thought leadership strategy
  • Writes and edits key FSOI position papers, academic essays, and opinion editorials with senior leadership
  • Integrates FSOI work with the IHS Communications & Marketing team
  • Convenes or joins occasional events for faculty and graduate students on FSOI themes

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Research interest in free speech and open inquiry (or a related subject)
  • Demonstrated ability to write effectively for both academic and educated lay audiences
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work on a deadline
  • Knowledge of classical liberal ideas
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Project management skills

Position Requirements and Preferences:

  • A PhD in the social sciences or humanities
  • Superb written communication and editing skills
  • Knowledge of higher education in economics, political science, philosophy, history, or law is an added advantage
