Job description

The University of Tartu announces an open call for a PhD position in Department of Philosophy on the topic of The Epistemology of Disagreement in Philosophy (supervisor Bryan Frances).

The epistemology of disagreement literature has focussed on one-on-one peer cases, but most disagreements of interest are group ones over controversial issues that have experts on both sides. This situation leads to several intriguing questions:

  • What is expertise?
  • How does philosophical expert disagreement differ from expert disagreement in other areas, such as science?
  • If pervasive expert disagreement robs most of us of knowledge regarding what the disagreement is about, then what about philosophical disagreement over commonsensical claims, such as those targeted by error theories?

The prospective candidates must show potential to make a significant contribution to philosophical debates related to such themes.

The admitted PhD student will be enrolled in the Philosophy PhD programme. The nominal study period is 2018-2022, starting from September 2018.

Research and studies will be funded by the programme DoRa Plus (European Regional Development Fund). Full time PhD student will be receiving a monthly grant of 660 euros during the nominal period of studies (4 years) and annual travel allowance (return travel between home and Tartu). In addition, there is a possibility of part-time employment as a junior research fellow (supported by the European Regional Development Fund Mobilitas Pluss project MOBTT45).

Application deadline: June 1, 2018.
