Job description

The Institute of Philosophy teaches philosophy in the master’s, bachelor’s and doctoral programmes of Philosophy, the master programmes “Political, Economic, and Legal Philosophy” and “Applied Ethics”. The research of the Institute covers questions in theoretical philosophy, history of philosophy, practical philosophy, political philosophy and phenomenology and also contributes to interdisciplinary research.

The Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking to appoint a

Professor (f/m) of Political Philosophy pursuant to § 99 Para. 1 of the University Act (UG)

(40 hours per week; fixed-term employment for 5 years according to the Austrian Law on Salaried Employment (AngG); expected starting date October 1st 2019 )

The new professor will teach and undertake research in the area of Political Philosophy. With particular emphasis on gender studies and feminist philosophy she or he will have special expertise in the following research core areas: liberal political philosophy and its history, global justice and human rights, normative authority and democratic theory, as well as philosophy of technology. The new professor is expected to complement and strengthen research networks of the University both through his or her own research and through participation in interdisciplinary research projects. She or he will maintain and deepen both local and international cooperations and develop them for research. The professorship is expected to make a contribution to the scientific communication with the public. She or he is expected to contribute to existing degree programmes, in particular the master’s programme “Political, Economic, and Legal Philosophy” and the module “Psychology and Philosophy” as part of the secondary school teacher accreditation programme. Moreover, the new professor will strongly participate in further developing political education at the University of Graz.

Requirements for employment

  • Completion of an appropriate university degree at a university in Austria or abroad
  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Political Philosophy
  • Excellent scientific qualification in research and teaching for the relevant subject (relative to academic age)
  • Educational and university didactic qualification
  • Leadership qualification
  • Relevant international experience

The candidate is expected to demonstrate his/her educational and didactic skills. She or he has special expertise in at least one of the above research core areas. The new professor is expected to contribute to gender research and feminist philosophy at the Institute as well as the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, to have an adequate teaching record, an interdisciplinary orientation, experience in the design and implementation of interdisciplinary research projects and the acquisition of third-party funds and to have the ability to teach in both German and English. We also expect competence in gender mainstreaming.  

Classification

Salary scheme of the Universitäten-KV (University Collective Agreement): A1

Minimum salary

The minimum salary according to the classification scheme of the collective agreement is EUR 70.071,40 gross per year. Salary subject to negotiation.
