Job description

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track positions at the rank of assistant professor beginning in fall semester 2019 (August 26, 2019).

Appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year. Appointment will be made at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in philosophy or related field required for appointment. Areas of specialization: Open, but the department has particular needs in Logic, Philosophy of Mathematics, and Ancient Philosophy.  Areas of competence: Feminist Theory, Philosophy of Race, or Non-Western Philosophy.

Successful applicants will have expertise in feminist theory, philosophy of race, or non-western philosophy.  In addition, we welcome applications from those who complement current department strengths and have the ability and interest required to teach logic, philosophy of mathematics, or ancient philosophy at the graduate level.

Aimed at promoting diversity in the department, the profession, and the academy, our new strategic plan focuses on supporting intellectual inclusivity and heterogeneity at all levels. These include the content we teach; the demographics of our undergraduate, graduate, and faculty populations; and the research activities we engage in and support. We will thus look to successful applicants to play an integral role in the ongoing evolution and implementation of this initiative.

The Department will assess candidates according to overall academic preparation, the relevance of their research to the department’s academic priorities and identified fields of inquiry, evidence or promise of becoming a leading researcher, evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, evidence of ability to mentor members of a diverse student body, and strength of recommendations. Ph.D. in philosophy or related field required for appointment.

Faculty in the Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research; develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses; advise students; and contribute service appropriate for the rank of appointment to the Department, College, University, and profession.

The Department of Philosophy has particular strengths in the areas of logic and philosophy of mathematics, moral and political philosophy, and the philosophy of science. Additional areas of emphasis include philosophy of language, the history of philosophy, and aesthetics. The department offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs. Because our ongoing strategic plan focuses on increasing diversity and inclusion in our teaching, research, and other professional activities, we plan to foster an increasing and continuous emphasis on non-traditional areas of philosophy. These include (but are not limited to) feminist philosophy, philosophy of race, and non-western philosophy.

Established in 1868, the College of Liberal Arts supports the University of Minnesota's land-grant mission as home to disciplines in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The College of Liberal Arts values diverse cultures, experiences, and perspectives as key to innovation and excellent education. http://cla.umn.edu/
