Job description

XAVIER UNIVERSITY, Cincinnati, OH. Assistant Professor, tenure track, starting August 2019. AOC: applicants must have a broad knowledge of the history of Western philosophy and emphasize the close reading of primary texts by major philosophers. AOS: open, but the department is particularly interested in medieval philosophy, history of analytic philosophy, American philosophy, non-Western philosophy, feminist philosophy, philosophy of race, and history and philosophy of science. The department already has strengths in political philosophy, ancient philosophy, 19th century German philosophy, and 20th century continental philosophy. The successful candidate will join Xavier faculty in the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts serving a diverse population of students. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University 20 years in a row among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities.

Required Qualifications:  Ph.D. in philosophy is required by the start of the position. Because Xavier is committed to a diverse and inclusive environment, we welcome a broad spectrum of candidates, and particularly invite applications from women, ethnic and racial minorities.

Position Responsibilities: The position is full time, with a 3/3 teaching load, usually including 2 sections of a core course (either PHIL 100:  Ethics as Introduction to Philosophy, which includes study of Plato’s Republic, or PHIL 200:  Philosophical Perspectives, which includes study of Descartes’ Discourse on Method) and 1 upper-division elective or First Year Seminar.
