The Department of Philosophy at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position to begin August 2013. Regular teaching responsibilities will include courses in Ancient Philosophy and Medieval Philosophy as well as introductory courses in a variety of philosophical areas. All members of the Philosophy Department are also expected to teach regularly in the colleges' Common Curriculum, which includes a First Year Seminar course and an upper level Ethics Seminar required of all graduates. Both of these Common Curriculum elements offer opportunities for creativity in course design. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to help the Department fulfill its Common Curriculum commitments as well as its commitment to offer both Ancient and Medieval Philosophy regularly. Additional upper-level courses in Philosophy are also possible teaching assignments, depending on the candidate's philosophical interests. The department would also value enhancing its ability to contribute to interdisciplinary programs in Theology, Asian Studies (Indian Philosophy), Peace Studies, Environmental Studies, and Gender and Women's Studies. A strong commitment to the education of undergraduates, including promoting undergraduate research, is essential. Ph.D. prior to appointment is preferred, but those who demonstrate the ability to earn the degree within one year of appointment will be considered.

The College of Saint Benedict, a liberal arts college for women, and Saint John's University, a liberal arts college for men, are located four miles apart in Central Minnesota just outside metropolitan St. Cloud and 70 miles from Minneapolis.
