Associate/Full Professor of Health Policy and Administration and Senior Research Associate/Senior Scientist in the Rock Ethics Institute

The Department of Health Policy and Administration (HPA) and the Rock Ethics Institute (REI) at The Pennsylvania State University invite applicants for a tenured faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level. We seek a leading scholar with a national reputation at the intersection of ethics and health who will contribute substantially to an interdisciplinary Ethics and Health Initiative, and whose work is dedicated to examining areas relevant to HPA through the lens of formal, ethical frameworks and ethical theory. The successful candidate may apply quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and normative approaches to the analysis of ethical issues within HPA's primary interest areas, including, but not limited to, health services, health policy, population health, health outcomes, economics, or management. The successful candidate will join a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to improving health services and the health of populations through research, teaching, and service. Competitive applicants will have a doctoral degree and a demonstrated ability to conduct research in a multi-disciplinary setting, including a track record for securing external research funding and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities. HPA and the REI both embrace diversity, equity and inclusion as core values in their missions and visions. Our goal is to empower a broadly diverse generation to become leaders and scholars who promote human health, development and quality of life throughout the lifespan. Successful applicants will join a growing, multidisciplinary faculty and will be expected to conduct research, teach, and advise students in doctoral, master's, and/or bachelor's degree programs. Compensation is competitive as are non-salary elements of the compensation package, and the position itself is a fully funded, “hard-money” position, with support from both HPA and the REI. Penn State has excellent support services available to faculty members and the College of Health and Human Development and the College of Liberal Arts are committed to providing the necessary resources critical to helping the successful candidate further his or her research prominence. The Department of Health Policy and Administration (http://www.hhdev.psu.edu/hpa/hpa-highlights) is an academic unit of the College of Health and Human Development. HPA offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, residential and online Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) degrees, a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Health Policy and Administration, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The department currently has 30 faculty members including 14 tenured or tenure track faculty, with authorization to grow that number to 16 or more tenured or tenure track faculty over the next few years. Currently, HPA faculty members are actively engaged in important externally funded research totaling more than $2.4 million annually. Opportunities to collaborate with other Penn State faculty are available within the Center for Health Care and Policy Research, the College of Medicine, the Center for Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems, the Social Science Research Institute, the Population Research Institute, the Children, Youth, and Families Consortium, the Center for Healthy Aging, the Methodology Center, and the Prevention Research Center. The successful candidate will hold a 50% appointment in the Rock Ethics Institute (http://rockethics.psu.edu/) as one of a transformative series of tenure-track appointments designed to ensure that Penn State becomes a leader in ethics-informed interdisciplinary research and the integration of ethical literacy throughout the University curriculum. Located in the College of the Liberal Arts, the REI currently has 13 tenured or tenure-track faculty shared with 8 colleges across the University, with authorization to expand to 18 tenured or tenure-track faculty over the next four years. The Rock Ethics Institute seeks candidates who will be effective in working on and leading interdisciplinary teams that embed ethical analysis into research projects and who have experience and interest in integrating ethics into undergraduate and graduate curricula. Faculty who are hired will receive a one-course release for the first five years for enhancing existing ethics research and curricular initiatives as well as building new initiatives and programs aligned with the Institute's mission. The Pennsylvania State University is a land grant institution and member of the Big 10 Conference. The University Park campus, located in State College, PA, is the largest campus with an enrollment of nearly 40,000 students and offers more than 100 programs of graduate study. The surrounding community of State College is a quintessential university town well known for its exceptional quality of life, including a low cost of living, a growing economy, a diverse offering of cultural and recreational opportunities, and excellent resources for families including well regarded local school systems. State College is served by three commercial airlines and is approximately a three-hour drive to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore, and a four-hour drive to Washington, D.C. and New York City. The University and the College have a variety of resources available to assist scholars with a transition to Penn State from another university and location. Receipt and review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. However, for full consideration, applications must be received by December 14, 2018. The expected beginning date is July 1, 2019. To be considered, applicants must complete an on-line application and upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and supporting information along with the names and contact information for three professional references. Applicants must also submit a statement describing how their work is relevant to the missions of both the REI and HPA and how a joint position is likely to augment their own work.
