Job description

The Queen’s College and the Faculty of Philosophy are seeking to recruit an Associate Professor or Professor of Philosophy, with a Tutorial Fellowship, to start from 1 September 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.   This is a permanent position after an initial probation. It is an open-rank position and is open to recently completed PhDs, or to those who will have submitted their dissertation for examination by the closing date, as well as to more senior scholars.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.

The Associate Professor/Professor will have an area of specialisation to include either Aesthetics or the Philosophy of Action, and an area of competence in Ethics. The successful candidate will have the potential to enhance the high reputation of the Faculty of Philosophy, and of the College, in research, will have a proven record of internationally recognised scholarship and research appropriate to their career stage, and will be expected to provide a high standard of research-led teaching (both undergraduate and graduate) for the Faculty and for the College.

 As a Tutorial Fellow of the College they will have oversight of the provision of philosophy teaching to students at Queen’s, they will share in the admission and pastoral care of students studying for degrees involving philosophy, and they will contribute to the good running and general oversight of the College as a member of the Governing Body.

 As well as a specialisation in Aesthetics or the Philosophy of Action, the postholder will be expected to have a broad range of philosophical interests (including Ethics), suitable to provide high-quality, engaged, teaching of undergraduates studying philosophy at Queen’s, in the very-small group (tutorial) or class setting.   

Salary and Allowances:

Combined University and College salary: £47,263 – £63,463 per annum, plus substantial additional benefits including a housing allowance of £13,920 p.a.  An additional allowance of £2,754 p.a. would be made upon award of the title of Professor.  The post also provides access to joint equity scheme or housing loan or the right to occupy housing owned by the College, a College research allowance of £3,070 p.a., access to private medical insurance scheme, and an allowance for additional guidance and welfare responsibilities to students of £3,120 p.a. after the first year in post.

Place of Work:

The College will provide a non-residential study/office on the main site in central Oxford. The post also carries full membership of the College’s Senior Common Room with the right to lunch and dine free of charge.
