Job description

The Governing Body of Emmanuel College invites applications for three stipendiary Research Fellowships in any subject, and for one non-stipendiary Research Fellowship in any subject in Mathematics or Science; all four Fellowships are for a three-year fixed term, and will commence on October 1, 2013.

Eligibility
Applications will be accepted from any graduate of a university within or outside the United Kingdom. Eligibility is restricted to those for whom the Research Fellowship would be their first substantial paid academic or research appointment (other than as a doctoral student). Candidates holding a fellowship or other post-doctoral stipend awarded by a Research Council or other similar body may apply and will be considered for the non-stipendiary Fellowship.

These Fellowships are intended for outstanding researchers early in their careers: successful candidates are likely to be in the latter stages of their research leading to a PhD degree, or post-doctoral researchers who have been awarded their PhD degree after 1 October 2011. Candidates should note that these Fellowships are extremely competitive.

Short-listed candidates in the sciences will be required to provide a statement on headed notepaper signed by the prospective Head of Department signifying his/her willingness to accommodate the Research Fellow, if elected. This statement must accompany the written work submitted by the candidate.

Fellowship details The stipend for Research Fellows is related to the national academic scale. The current stipends are £22,233 (£24,333 if not resident in College) for post-doctoral Research Fellows and £20,877 (£22,977 if not resident in College) for pre-doctoral Research Fellows. Pre-doctoral Research Fellows will be responsible for any University fee they incur up to the level of a UK post-graduate student; the College will contribute the difference if a higher fee is applicable. Fellows are permitted to receive additional remuneration for up to six hours College or University teaching a week.

Additional benefits for Research Fellows will include grants for research expenses and academic travel, a book allowance, and assistance with computing facilities. Research Fellows will be given the option to live in College (although no married accommodation can be provided), and are entitled to lunch and dinner in Hall free of charge.

Research Fellows are normally required to reside in Cambridge during Full Term. However, subject always to the permission of the Governing Body, Research Fellows may work away from Cambridge for up to three Terms during the last two years of their Fellowship, either by retaining their Fellowship on full stipend, or by intermitting their Fellowship without stipend and thereby postponing its finishing date.

Timetable All applications must be submitted online at www.emma.cam.ac.uk/resfell from 3 September 2012, and fully completed applications (including references) must be received by 5 pm on 4 October 2012. In case of queries which cannot be answered using the online FAQ section please send an e-mail to the address below. It is the responsibility of candidates to ensure that references are submitted by this deadline.

Candidates who are short-listed by the College will be invited in the week beginning 12 November 2012 to submit their writings in electronic format and as two hard copies, by 20 November 2012. No interviews are held and written work is rigorously assessed. It is hoped to make elections to the Research Fellowships no later than 29 January 2013.
