Job description |
Tsinghua University is one of the two best universities in China. Its Philosophy Department is inviting applications for the following position. Position: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) OR Associate Professor (Tenured) Job description: research in one of the areas listed, teaching (typically 3 courses per year, in either English or Chinese), and normal academic service. Salary: About 250,000 RMB for the Assistant Professor Position and about 350,000 RMB for the Associate Professor Position. Requirements for the Assistant Professor Position (Tenure-Track): PhD in hand (or expected soon) in any of the above-mentioned areas. PhD must be completed before employment can begin. Requirements for the Associate Professor Position (Tenured): PhD in any of the above-mentioned areas, at least 5 years of teaching experience at reputable universities after obtaining PhD, at least 3 published articles in leading journals. Desirable but not necessary: one monography in one of the above-mentioned areas. Languages: Excellent English (written and spoken), very good Latin (only for applicants specializing in Roman Philosophy or Medieval Philosophy) or very good Greek (only for applicants specializing in Ancient Greek Philosophy), fluency in German is desirable but not necessary. Short-listed candidates will be invited to interviews, either in person or over the internet. After the interviews, the philosophical faculty will recommend one candidate to the university for approval. The chance that the university will reject the recommendation is low, but not zero. IMPORTANT NOTE: Unlike in many other places, there is a long and burdensome administrative process between the philosophical faculty’s decision as to which candidate to recommend and the university’s decision as to whether to approve the recommendation. It is long and burdensome for both sides, so the recommended candidate should expect to spend much time and effort going through the process with us. People who are unwilling or unable to go through this process should not apply. |
