Job description

The department of philosophy in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, Florida) invites applications for the William F. Dietrich Professor of Philosophy. For this endowed position, the department is encouraging applications from Associate or Full Professors who have a distinguished record of research and teaching in any of the following areas: Bioethics, medical ethics, and/or environmental philosophy, philosophy of technology, and/or philosophy of mind/consciousness.

The responsibilities of the Dietrich Chair in philosophy will include teaching a variety of lower- and upper-division undergraduate philosophy courses and the option to teach courses for the established and emergent graduate programs in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, including but not limited to the Masters in Liberal Studies and the Ph.D. Program in Comparative Studies.

Other responsibilities will include mentoring students and faculty, participating in programmatic development in the Department and/or College, engaging in professional and University service, and maintaining a high level of research productivity, as evidenced through a sustained level of scholarly publications and grant applications.

Candidates for this position should articulate how they would contribute to the philosophy department's aspirations to develop a Masters program and how they would help to shape such a program. Candidates should have a clear vision for advancing the research mission of the College and University, particularly as this relates to the University's Pillar and Platforms.

The successful candidate will receive a reduced teaching load and a research budget in order maintain a high level of research productivity. He/she will be an experienced and dynamic individual who can work collaboratively with other departments and/or Colleges to build intellectual bridges across the University, through the development of a long-term research agenda that opens new avenues of research while complementing and enhancing existing research programs.

Minimum Qualification:

Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Philosophy at time of application required.

A distinguished record of research and publication, and a demonstrated record of teaching required.
