Description

The Department of Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of American politics of race, with an expected start date of July 1, 2020. At the time of application, applicants must either hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree-granting program. The Department is interested in candidates who are committed to advancing equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, mentorship, and service. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at UC Berkeley and in the Department of Rhetoric. Our excellence can only be realized by faculty, students, and staff committed to these values.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicants should demonstrate evidence of a strong humanistic research agenda and excellent scholarly potential in areas that complement existing strengths in the Department, as well as an ability and willingness to teach a wide range of courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, to mentor graduate students in the Ph.D. program, and to participate in departmental and campus life. While the area of specialization is open, the Department strongly values interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches that address the centrality and intersectionality of racism in American politics. Applicants whose research and teaching are centered in the rhetoric of political theory, critical theory, and race in the United States are strongly encouraged to apply. The Department welcomes applicants with specializations in such areas as Black, Latinx, and Native American political thought; and critical race/indigeneity approaches to American politics. All additional specializations are welcome, including those whose scholarship address questions of democracy, citizenship, environment and land, violence, slavery, colonial settlement and extermination, immigration, poverty, law, civil rights, and gender and sexuality; the history, culture, and politics of contemporary struggles for racial justice; and comparative perspectives.
