Job description

San Francisco State University’s Department of Philosophy offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Applied Ethics beginning August 2020. Qualified candidates must have a record of publication and teaching in bioethics and medical ethics.  We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

The Department of Philosophy is a dynamic teaching and research program with a long history of achievement.  It offers two B.A. degrees (in Philosophy and in Philosophy and Religion) and the M.A. degree (in Philosophy), a Pre-Law Emphasis, and a rich array of courses that address the diverse backgrounds of its faculty and students. Its M.A. program attracts students from around the world and has a successful record of placing graduates in doctoral programs and teaching positions. Recently it has made national news for its certificate on ethics and A.I. and for its success at drawing students from underrepresented groups into professional philosophy. Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in bioethics and applied ethics more generally, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing program of scholarship in one’s area of specialty, coordinating field projects in medical ethics, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or equivalent. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

Preferred:

  • Record of teaching contributions in the areas of bioethics and medical ethics
  • Active record of scholarship related to bioethics and medical ethics
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and scholarship
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities
  • Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments

Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
