Job description

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for department chairperson.

The chair will provide academic and administrative leadership for the department, promoting excellence in teaching, scholarship, advisement, and service to the university and the profession. The chair is expected to build consensus, practice shared governance, and be committed to the values of diversity and inclusion. It is anticipated that the chair will build upon the department’s existing strengths (as well as develop new ones) and oversee future hires. The successful applicant should be a strong advocate for the interests of the department and for the discipline of philosophy (at the college, university, and community levels), and be willing to serve for at least three years.

This position will be a concurrent tenured appointment in the department. Teaching responsibilities are two courses per year. Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications, and applications from members of historically underrepresented groups in the philosophy profession are particularly welcome.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in philosophy; an established record of research and teaching excellence; and previous administrative experience that would furnish evidence of the applicant’s capacity to perform the duties of department chair.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrable skill in mentoring faculty in their professional development; effectiveness at developing both undergraduate and graduate programs; evidence of attention to diversity, equity and inclusion in research, teaching, and/or service; and ability to secure outside funding. Applications from both Associate and Full professors will be considered, but all candidates should have credentials sufficient for appointment as a tenured Full professor.

Department Information

The Department of Philosophy administers BA and MA degree programs, with two tracks at the undergraduate level, one in general philosophy, and the other in ethics, law, and politics. The department has about 80 majors, and an equal number of minors. In recent years, the department has experienced growth in the number of faculty, research productivity, and external funding awards. The department expects to play a noteworthy role in the university’s long-term expansion plans through its course offerings and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The College of Liberal Arts is central to the intellectual and artistic life of the University of Nevada, Reno. The college offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degrees and supports major scholarly research and creative activity in the social sciences, humanities, and arts. Total compensation
