Purpose:

The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks an outstanding Inclusive Excellence Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of Diversity & Immigration Ethics.  We seek a scholar who has a deep interest in studying and teaching ethics as a pertinent frame by which to think about diversity and immigration issues.  We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose work is interdisciplinary in nature. The Markkula Center is the largest and most comprehensive applied ethics center in the world.  Beyond a full range of events, grants, and fellowships for the Santa Clara University Community, the Center also serves professionals in fields from technology to business to health care, from government to the social sector, providing innovative approaches to problems from fake news to privacy protection. Through our website and international collaborations, we also bring ethical decision-making resources to the wider world. This is a two-year postdoctoral fellowship opportunity. The goal of the Inclusive Excellence Postdoctoral Fellowship program at Santa Clara University is to support the early development of teaching scholars who are from historically underrepresented groups. 

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in one or more of the College of Arts and Sciences academic departments (https://www.scu.edu/cas/academics/departments-and-programs/ ), depending on disciplinary expertise. Santa Clara University is on the quarter system: the teaching load will be two courses over three quarters in the first year and three courses over four quarters in the second year. Teaching duties include but are not limited to:

1.         Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:

  • Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
  • Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students.
  • Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;
  • Submitting student grades that are an appropriate, accurate and fair measure of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
  • Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses. 
  • Teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or work with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
  • Serve as an advisor to assigned students providing informed advice;
  • Develop courses for which they are responsible and contribute to general curriculum development.

 This Fellow will also have a part-time appointment in the Markkula Center, where they will help develop ethical guidelines, case studies and other applied content in the field of immigration studies, and contribute articles on applied ethics for the Markkula Center’s website and other publications.

Qualifications:

Candidates for this position must have an active research program, a record of effective teaching, and have earned a Ph.D. by September 1, 2020 in a related field, such as Political Science, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Women’s & Gender Studies, Philosophy, or a closely related field within the past two years.
