Job description

Central College’s department of philosophy and religion seeks applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 2020. The required area of specialization is the history of philosophy, with areas of competence including ancient Greek philosophy, medieval philosophy, and ethics (broadly construed).

The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in philosophy to majors and non-majors, including courses that are part of the college’s general education curriculum. Applicants should have a strong foundation in the history of philosophy and be able to teach Classical Thought, the first course in our history of philosophy sequence, which covers classical Greek and medieval philosophy. In addition, applicants should be prepared to teach an introductory ethics course, upper-level electives in their areas of competence, as well as courses in applied ethics that engage other college programs (e.g., Biomedical Ethics, Environmental Ethics).

Potential candidates should be committed to undergraduate teaching, and have an understanding of, and appreciation for, the liberal arts environment. While teaching is the highest priority, all faculty at Central are supported in pursuing a scholarly agenda and professional development.

Central’s department of philosophy and religion is comprised of collegial and dynamic faculty who are committed to the liberal arts as well as excellence in teaching and scholarship. Although philosophy and religion are separate programs within the department, it is important that the successful candidate be open to engaging in dialogue with students and colleagues on questions of faith and reason.

Graduates in philosophy have pursued advanced degrees in philosophy, theology, law, medicine and educational administration, as well as careers such as actuarial science, software design, and counseling psychology. Over 96% of Central graduates are employed, in graduate school, or completing meaningful service within one year of graduation.

REQUIREMENTS:  Applicants should have a PhD in philosophy and be committed to excellence and innovation in a liberal arts undergraduate education.
