The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies invites applications for a full time, tenure-eligible Assistant Professor in Philosophy with an anticipated start date in August of 2020. Areas of Specialization (AOS): Open, but the candidate’s primary research must be directly and significantly related to emerging technologies and human futures. Areas of Concentration (AOC): Open. We welcome approaches to emerging technologies and human futures from within any of the subfields of philosophy, including theoretical, social, and normative approaches. We also welcome a variety of topical foci, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, human enhancement, nanotechnologies, genome editing, sustainability-related technologies, as well as issues of privacy, eugenic uses, fair distribution, and global impact of new technologies.

Required Qualifications
• PhD or equivalent in Philosophy or related discipline by time of appointment
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in research
• Area of primary research must be directly and significantly related to emerging technologies and human futures

• Ability to forge connections between SHPRS and other units at ASU similarly engaged with emerging technologies and human futures, such as the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, the Center for Science and the Imagination, the Beyond Center, and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the School of Sustainability and, depending on the hire, potentially the College of Law, School of Life Sciences, School of Social Transformation, and Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts.
