Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Xavier University invites applications for a non-tenure-track, yearly-renewable Teaching Professorship, beginning in Fall 2020. The Teaching Professor position is renewable on a yearly basis, with the potential after six years for promotion to Senior Teaching Professor with a rolling two-year renewable contract. Candidates must be dedicated to undergraduate teaching.  The successful candidate will be able to engage diverse groups of students in learning opportunities.

Duties will include teaching mostly beginning and intermediate level philosophy courses (PHIL 100:  Ethics as Introduction to Philosophy and PHIL 200:  Philosophical Perspectives) as well as occasional elective courses (for a description of these courses, see our departmental website).  AOS: Preference for ancient philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind.  AOC: Preference for the study of great books in the history of Western philosophy

In addition to teaching, duties include service and participation in the life of the Department and University consistent with the mission of Jesuit higher education, and professional development activities on and off campus.  Teaching load is typically four courses per semester.

Qualifications: The candidate must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in philosophy by August 24, 2020.  In addition, we look for evidence of excellence in and commitment to undergraduate teaching. Candidates must be committed to outstanding teaching in a liberal arts tradition of active learning, with a strong background in the history of philosophy and dedication to teaching from primary sources.
