Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by August 2020.

California State University, Sacramento is primarily a teaching institution that prides itself on its diversity and its commitment as an anchor university to the state capital and the region. Candidates for this position are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in philosophy and a commitment to balancing this priority with an active research agenda and service to the department, college, university, and regional community. Normal teaching duties include four courses per semester at the undergraduate level in the areas of specialization and competence. Candidates should have experience or at least demonstrate a willingness to design and teach online and hybrid courses. A successful candidate’s service would include contributing to the scholarly life of the discipline, contributing to student advising and supervising undergraduate research, participating in our department’s ongoing programs, contributing to our Center for Practical and Professional Ethics, and participating in the systems of shared governance of the department, college, and university.

Sacramento is one of the most diverse cities in the country and California State University, Sacramento reflects this diversity as a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving and Asian-American Native American Pacific Islander Serving institution. More than half of our students are students of color, one third of our students are first in their families to go to college, and 49% of our undergraduates are recipients of a Pell Grant (https://www2.calstate.edu/csu-system/about-the-csu/facts-about-the-csu/Documents/facts2018.pdf). The University is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion by embracing the strengths and differences of its members and providing equal access to educational opportunities and a welcoming environment for everyone. We encourage applications by women, members of underrepresented minorities, and any qualified applicants who share this commitment and would be eager to serve our diverse student population. California State University, Sacramento is an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Employer. The University considers applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, pregnancy, genetic information, medical condition, marital status, veteran status, or disability. The University hires only those individuals who are lawfully authorized to accept employment in the United States (or would have proper authorization prior to the start of employment).

Review of applications will begin on January 2, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.  Complete applications must be submitted electronically through the Sacramento State jobs website located at https://csus.peopleadmin.com, and must include: (1) a cover letter; (2) a current curriculum vita; (3) unofficial transcripts of all college work (official transcripts required if invited for an interview); (4) a sample of professional written work;  (5) a statement of scholarly interest; (6) a statement of teaching philosophy; (7) a statement of diversity and inclusion; (8) a teaching “portfolio” including sample syllabi and a list of courses taught or developed; and (9) evidence of “teaching effectiveness” such as summaries of student evaluations. In addition, candidates must also send three recent confidential letters of recommendation. Letters must be sent electronically to the email address [email protected].

Statements of diversity and inclusion will be reviewed to determine candidates’ demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service to their university and broader community. Candidates are encouraged to describe the following specific criteria, preferably in this order, (a) their potential and/or demonstrated ability to attract, teach and mentor undergraduates, including their experience supporting the success of a diverse student population, (b) their record on inclusive pedagogy and curriculum (as evidenced by their syllabi content, evaluations, methodological approaches, and teaching philosophy), (c) their record, impact, and productivity on inclusive research and scholarship, and (d) their potential and/or demonstrated ability to be a conscientious, inclusive, and engaged member of the university community and the broader community beyond the university.

Candidates are also encouraged to include a link at the top of their cover letter to a personal webpage that gives some evidence of their capabilities for providing online philosophy instruction and interaction.

A background check, including a criminal records check, must be completed satisfactorily before a candidate can be offered a position with California State University, Sacramento. The successful candidate would be considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in the California State University Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
