Job description

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow for the applied ethics strand of the Mind and Machine project at the Oxford Martin School. The post is fixed-term for three years from the date of appointment. A fractional appointment or job share will be considered in exceptional cases.

Appointment at grade six (£26,004 - £31,020 per annum) with an adjustment in duties will be considered for promising candidates who do not have all of the required skills, experience and qualifications.

Mind and Machine is an interdisciplinary research project jointly held by the department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Philosophy. The project includes a collaboration of biologists, engineers, and computer scientists to work on developing and applying technology that will allow the observation of and intervention in brain function. The project will not only advance the science of brain intervention but also develop robust insights into the ethical, legal and social implications of such research, which will be the focus of this post.

The postholder will conduct both independent research and provide research assistance in applied ethics relevant to these and related technological developments. The post will be based at the Oxford Uehiro Centre in central Oxford. The successful applicant will have a postgraduate qualification at PhD (or equivalent) or Masters level and a background in ethics or related discipline. The postholder will have a proven ability to assimilate large amounts of data to produce summaries and drafts of publications, working independently to produce basic materials for co-authored publications. An interest in bioethics, especially enhancement is essential, an interest in public engagement and policy is desirable.
