Job description

The School of Philosophy, University College Dublin, is seeking to recruit one PhD candidate in the philosophy of language and mind, starting in September 2020.

- PhD student stipend of €18k per year.
- €4k per year in research allowance
- Student fees are waived.
- Three years full time.
- Both EU and non-EU students are eligible.

The student will work under the supervision of Elmar Unnsteinsson, who is currently Lecturer/Assistant Professor and Ad Astra Fellow at University College Dublin. The student’s proposed project and research interests should match Unnsteinsson’s own areas of specialization. Any proposal in philosophy of language and philosophy of mind is eligible and will be considered. The student will be proactive in proposing and organizing events (masterclasses, workshops, invited speakers, etc.) relevant to their topic of interest, using the generous research allowance.

Potential applicants are encouraged to look at Unnsteinsson’s published papers, e.g., on PhilPapers, to gauge how well the proposal fits his research projects. Unnsteinsson is currently working on applying speech act theory to phenomena like insincerity, inner speech, self-deception, and fragmented minds. But he is also actively working on singular reference, implicit attitudes, theories of silencing, hate speech, and oppressive speech, and on incorporating theories of mechanistic explanation into semantics and pragmatics.

Applications from female candidates and those from a minority ethnic background are particularly welcome.

We offer a structured PhD programme in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin, which involves taught courses in the first year of study. In Dublin there is a very lively culture of collaborative research activity, invited speaker seminars, international conferences, and workshops. In any one year we have about 20 MA students and 40 doctoral students, and they meet regularly with students from Trinity at work in progress seminars. Our research students are offered the opportunity to act as tutors and teaching assistants and have been successful in attracting national and international research funding, including postgraduate and postdoctoral fellowships. Philosophy PhDs from UCD have been able to secure permanent academic jobs in universities around the world.
