IEPI POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN DATA ETHICS

Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Data Ethics

Bargaining Unit: CUPE Local 3906, Unit 3

Location: Institute on Ethics & Policy for Innovation, Faculty of Humanities, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Funding: $55,000 CAD per year + benefits

The Institute on Ethics & Policy for Innovation (IEPI) is focused on identifying and addressing ethical challenges, ethics-related risk, and policy gaps encountered along the innovation lifecycle for health technologies and interventions in global health and development. IEPI is led by Dr. Claudia Emerson, Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy, who will be the supervisor for this fellowship.

The IEPI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is funded by a CIHR grant, as part of an EU-CAN-Share project on integrating human data repositories for infectious disease-related international cohorts (ReCoDID). The Fellowship will consider political, ethical, administrative, regulatory and legal (PEARL) issues and develop a framework to facilitate equitable data sharing. As a postdoctoral researcher in data ethics you will lead IEPI`s work on the ReCoDID project, collaborating with colleagues internationally to address relevant PEARL barriers and solutions.  

The keys to success in this position will include your ability to:

  • Take initiative and work autonomously as the IEPI lead on the project
  • Utilize your knowledge of data ethics to perform in-depth research, critical analysis, and synthesis of material, which will contribute to timely recommendations for ReCoDID’s cloud-based federated data sharing platform
  • Independently define and solve problems with creativity and resourcefulness
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills to lead the writing and preparation of manuscripts, reports and other communications to support the project internally and externally
  • Build effective partnerships to collaborate with colleagues internationally to advance proposed solutions
  • Excel in a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary environment through engagement in Institute activities contributing to an environment of learning and collaboration

Experience in ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications)-related research, applied ethics research, qualitative research, and working in one or more of the following research environments would be considered an asset: global health, data resources and biobank management, international policy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • You will have completed a PhD program within the five years immediately preceding the initial appointment start date.
  • You have the ability to travel to national and international overnight destinations for meetings, conferences and seminars.
