AOS: History of Philosophy

AOC: Open

Assistant Professor of Philosophy, first or second term.  Position will begin July 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Minimum teaching load of four courses/year over three quarters, graduate and undergraduate levels, and usual dissertation, committee, and advising responsibilities.

A goal of the search is to increase the diversity of the faculty in the Department, and we therefore welcome applicants who come from groups that are historically underrepresented in the disciplines noted above, such as women, black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and individuals with disabilities.

Qualifications

The department invites applications from candidates specializing in any area in the History of Philosophy. The department especially welcomes applications from individuals specializing in the areas of Ancient Greek and Roman Theoretical Philosophy, Kant and post-Kantian Idealism, 19th- and 20th-century Continental Philosophy, Early Analytic Philosophy, African-American Philosophy, and non-European Philosophical Traditions. We seek a colleague with an ambitious research agenda yielding active and innovative scholarship, characterized by cogency of argument, knowledge of sources, and originality of interpretation. Successful applicants will contribute to the scholarly community of the department and university, and have the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher in the university’s core curriculum, in introductory to advanced undergraduate courses in Philosophy, and in graduate courses related to their area of expertise.

All requirements for receipt of a doctoral degree in Philosophy or related field must be completed by the start of the appointment.

We anticipate conducting first round interviews in early December, and extended interviews of finalists in January or early February. (All interviews will be conducted remotely. Due to the continuing pandemic we do not expect to bring finalists to campus, but finalists should still expect to give a presentation and be available for a day or two of meetings.)
