Job description

The Centre for Humanities in Athabasca University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing January 4th, 2021. This is a full-time position located in Alberta. Athabasca University is a fully accredited, post-secondary institution with a commitment to facilitating open access to education.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Philosophy, although PhDs in related disciplines may be considered. We are very interested in candidates whose research and teaching extend beyond the traditional Western philosophical canon. We are seeking someone who is excited to collaborate with colleagues in expanding and pluralizing the intellectual universe of our courses and programs and who puts philosophy in touch with the world by incorporating concrete contemporary issues into their teaching and research. We prefer candidates whose research addresses one or more of the following areas: decolonization, Indigenous philosophy, critical epistemologies/ontologies, postcolonialism and anti-colonialism, critical philosophy of race, Africana philosophy, feminist and queer philosophy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching, revising, and coordinating two courses in Critical Thinking (PHIL 152 and PHIL 252) and will be expected to design and develop new courses as determined by the requirements of program development and their research interests. There are also teaching opportunities in Master of Arts for Interdisciplinary Studies.

Evidence of teaching excellence is required, with graduate teaching experience considered to be an asset, and familiarity with online systems of course delivery and distance education is preferred. The candidate will participate in program coordination duties and related tasks appropriate to the maintenance and growth of a professional degree articulation program. All faculty members are expected to participate in administrative committees, including those pertaining to centre, faculty, or university-wide endeavors. All educational credentials must be recognized in Canada.
