Job description |
We wish to appoint a new Shelby Cullom Davis Professor in the Department of Philosophy, within the School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies. The successful candidate will be an outstanding scholar of international standing in philosophy. They will be expected to have a range of interests which strengthen and complement those within the Department and make an outstanding contribution to the field’s advancement through published work. The successful candidate will also have a proven track record of securing significant grant funding and leading high quality externally funded research projects, or be able to demonstrate potential for success in future applications for such projects. They will be expected to represent the University of St Andrews in the UK and international academic communities. The Shelby Cullom Davis Chair in Philosophy was established and fully endowed in 2018 following a donation from the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund, through St Andrews alumnus Christopher C Davis, who studied Moral Philosophy and Practical Theology at St Andrews and graduated in 1987. Candidates will hold a doctorate in philosophy and will be expected to show a commitment to outstanding teaching at all levels, from first-year undergraduate teaching to postgraduate supervision. The primary criteria for appointment will be evidence of an internationally recognised research record, a clear programme of anticipated research activity for the coming years, and a significant research funding record (or potential for such). Informal enquiries about this post may be directed either to the Head of Department, Dr Simon Prosser ([email protected]), or to Professor Jessica Brown ([email protected]), or Professor James Harris ([email protected]). The Department of Philosophy is committed to providing an open, equitable, and inclusive work environment, which is free from bullying and harassment and welcoming to all. We welcome applications from members of groups who are under-represented in academic philosophy and/or at the University of St Andrews, including but not limited to women, members of racialised minority groups, persons with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies has received the Athena Swan bronze award. The University of St Andrews is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, as demonstrated through its work on the Gender and Race Equality Charters, its Athena SWAN award for women in science, its HR Excellence in Research Award, and its signing of the LGBT Charter: see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/. |
