Job description |
Tenure-track, assistant professor position in Philosophy beginning Fall 2021. Appointment at higher rank is also possible for qualified candidates. Candidates must hold a Ph.D or be within a year of its completion. Teaching load is 3-2. The area of specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates with teaching competence in one or more of the following areas: nineteenth- and twentieth-century Continental philosophy, non-Western philosophy, philosophy of race, feminist philosophy, philosophy of sex and gender, and environmental philosophy. Located in the Hudson Valley two hours north of New York City, Bard has established a reputation for excellence in undergraduate teaching, outstanding programs in the arts, and innovative educational programs beyond the undergraduate college such as the Bard Prison Initiative and the Clemente Course in the Humanities. The academic life of the college focuses on undergraduate teaching in small, intensive seminars; creative general education programs that build communities of learning among diverse student populations; innovative collaborations between faculty in teaching and research; and close relationships between faculty and students, culminating in the senior project, a major piece of independent work completed by all graduates. Bard is also a founding member of OSUN (the Open Society University Network), an international consortium of institutions stretching across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, whose goal is to facilitate transnational collaboration among students and faculty and to enhance access to higher education among underserved populations. Our institutional goals lead us to seek candidates who are passionate teachers excited to share their love of philosophy with a diverse student body. The Philosophy program at Bard is pluralistic and emphasizes historical approaches to philosophy, dialogue between philosophical traditions, and connections between philosophy and other disciplines. Bard College is a private institution working in the public interest. Bard faculty and staff lead their students by example, building upon the existing network of boundary-breaking programs focused on rethinking who can and should be included in a liberal arts education. The successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. To apply, candidates should submit via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/81367 a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample, research statement, teaching portfolio (including sample syllabi and student evaluations) and three or more letters of recommendation (at least one addressing teaching). Letters are not required for tenured candidates. Candidates are also invited to submit an optional diversity statement in which they describe how they would contribute to the diversity goals of the program and the college. The deadline for receipt of applications is Jan. 5. For more information about the Philosophy Program at Bard, please visit http://philosophy.bard.edu or email the search committee chair, Jay Elliott ([email protected]). Bard College is an equal opportunity employer and is especially interested in candidates who contribute to the diversity goals of the institution. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, mental, or physical disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, familial status, veteran status, or genetic information. Bard is committed to providing access, equal opportunity, and reasonable accommodation for all individuals in employment practices, services, programs, and activities. |
