Job description

DePauw University
The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics
Nancy Schaenen Endowed Visiting Scholar of Ethics

The Janet Prindle Institute of Ethics at DePauw University invites applications for the position of Nancy Schaenen Endowed Visiting Scholar of Ethics and Assistant Director of Academic Services for the 2021-2022 academic year. This is a one-year position, which may be renewed for a total of three years.

As the Schaenen Scholar,  the successful candidate will teach 1-2 courses per academic year and will work on a research project of their choice. As the Assistant Director of Academic Services, the successful candidate will be a part of the core Prindle Management Team and help guide and execute programming, particularly those areas of programming that relate to their areas of expertise.

We seek a scholar or artist with strong interest, expertise, and record of accomplishment and/or promise in ethics through the lens of any discipline. While we are looking for an excellent candidate that focuses on any area related to ethics, The Prindle Institute for Ethics has an interest in candidates who specialize in philosophy/ethics of race, business ethics, ethics and leadership, philosophy/ethics for children, or bioethics. We are also particularly interested in candidates with a passion for engaging the general public in their areas of expertise.

Successful candidates will be passionate about the teaching and study of ethics in the liberal arts undergraduate curriculum, and will have a terminal degree in their field.

The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics provides a compelling physical space and a distinctive forum for DePauw students, faculty, and staff that fosters ethics education, research, and dialogue. The Institute also has a national outreach mission to encourage everyone to think more deliberately about ethics and the critical issues of our time.

We hope the successful candidate gains at least two benefits: to have time and resources to work on their own research project and to develop the skills and understanding to either start an ethics center/program at their home institution or take on a leadership role at an existing ethics institute or center.

The Nancy Schaenen Scholar/Assistant Director of Academic Services will contribute to the Prindle Institute and the DePauw intellectual community with a portfolio that will include a blend from among the following responsibilities:

Key responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Academic Services

  • Serve as a member of the Prindle Institute Management Team

  • Work closely with our Prindle Institute Team and DePauw students on our Public Philosophy and K-12 Ethics Education initiatives . Learn more about those at http://prindleinstitute.org

  • Attend Weekly Prindle Institute Management and Staff Meetings

  • Oversee programs such as the following, depending on the selected candidate’s area of expertise:

    • Prindle Ethics Course submissions

    • Faculty Reading Group proposals

    • Prindle Prizes selection

    • Young Philosophers Lecture Series (if their field is philosophy)

  • Assist in Prindle’s Leadership Development and Ethics Consulting Efforts

  •  Serve as a member of the Prindle Institute Advisory Committee

  • Assist in the delivery of all other Prindle Institute ethics enrichment programs

Key responsibilities of the Nancy Schaenen Scholar

  • Teach one course in the fall term and one course in the spring term in the successful candidate’s academic discipline (or the workload equivalent in the form of co-curricular enrichment with approval of the Director and the Vice President for Academic Affairs)

  • Work on a research project of the successful candidate’s choice

Additional Support
The Prindle Institute is committed to the successful candidate’s academic and professional success, and will assist the successful candidate with resources to conduct research and perform the additional responsibilities outlined above. The position comes with a generous professional development budget. Clerical support will be provided, as needed, for any administrative work.
