Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Tilburg University seeks to appoint:

Two Assistant Professors Philosophy (0,8 - 1,0 FTE)

Dutch: Twee UD’s Filosofie (0,8 - 1,0 FTE)

Starting date approximately August 1, 2021

This is one of two positions. The other can be found here:
https://philjobs.org/job/show/16430

The Philosophy Department at Tilburg University seeks to appoint two outstanding philosophers at the level of Assistant Professor (Dutch: UD Filosofie). Both positions include teaching (60-65%) and research (35-40%) responsibilities together with related management or service tasks. Teaching responsibilities include coordination of 4-5 courses per year at both the Bachelor and Master levels. An important portion of these tasks involves teaching philosophy to large classes of non-philosophy students (at Bachelor level).
The candidates are expected to acquire a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO).
Given the Department’s overall teaching needs, societal embeddedness, and other responsibilities, one of these positions will be filled by a candidate with native fluency in Dutch. However, many courses are taught in English, and hence both candidates must have a good command of English from the start; C2 level in writing and speaking in English must be obtained in two years. If not already acquired, successful candidates are expected to acquire a University Teaching Qualification (BKO). Tilburg University offers courses for acquiring this certification. It is welcomed if the candidates are prepared to move to (the vicinity of) Tilburg.

Profile of the candidates
The successful candidates hold a PhD in philosophy. They are highly capable teachers, as demonstrated by prior teaching experience and/or a sample lecture (if invited to an interview). They enjoy and are able to teach philosophy to both philosophers and non-philosophers. We welcome candidates that can teach subjects outside their areas of specialization (for example on the history of philosophy and ethics).
The successful candidates find it important to engage with society as a philosopher, for example by participating in public debate. The successful candidates are also good researchers. They have a track record of publications (e.g., in good international journals or well-received books with good publishers) or show the capability of developing such a record early in their career (the candidate is expected to publish at least 1 article in an A-journal each year and to apply regularly for external research funding). The successful candidates are expected to participate actively in the research activities of the Department and communicate their research to people outside their specialization or philosophical orientation. They are also open to interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration as well as bridging continental and analytical philosophy.

Specifics Position 1
Area of Specialization (AoS): Open
Preference for political and social philosophy and business ethics, and other fields that relate to the existing research interests in the department, including applied ethics, environmental ethics, ethics of digital technology), philosophy of markets, philosophy of organizations, modern philosophy (e.g. Hume, Rousseau), contemporary philosophy (e.g., Contemporary German Philosophy), philosophy of violence and feminist philosophy.

Area of Competence (AoC): political and social philosophy, and (business) ethics.
The successful candidate will teach courses in political and social philosophy, and ethics in the Philosophy BA and MA Programs. The candidate will also likely teach a course on business ethics in a non-philosophy Bachelor program.

The Department
The Department of Philosophy (DFI) at Tilburg University is both an important center of academic teaching and internationally recognized for its research. It offers a lively, amicable and stimulating teaching and research environment. The department provides a supportive, collegial environment free from the (unhealthy) climate of competition that has become the standard in academia.
Philosophical research at Tilburg is often done in an interdisciplinary framework. Research is organized in two groups: TiLPS (Tilburg Center for Moral Philosophy, Epistemology and Philosophy of Science) and PHC&E (Philosophy of Humanity, Culture, and Ethics).

Employment terms and conditions
The positions will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as assistant professor 2 (“universitair docent 2”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 3746,- up to (maximally) € 5127,- per month (max  € 71.552,- all in per year). The start of the employment is negotiable, preferably August 1, 2021. Successful candidates receive a contract for four years. Whether the appointment can be extended permanently after this period will depend on the candidate’s proven capacities in teaching and research, together with the organizational and financial situation of the department. Fluency in Dutch (at B1 level) will also be relevant for the permanent position.

Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment, such as a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually), an options model and reimbursement of moving expenses. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies.
