Job description |
The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Western Carolina invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track appointment in philosophy at the assistant professor level, to begin August 1, 2021. We are a small, highly collegial department that contributes heavily to the university’s general education curriculum seeking a colleague with broad teaching interests and a commitment to creating classes that are welcoming, accessible, and valuable to students with varied backgrounds and interests. Our departmental emphasis is on issues at the intersections of philosophy and religious studies, and we seek a colleague with interest in and competence to teach classes that serve both concentrations. We furthermore seek a colleague prepared to design and teach classes that emphasize diversity and inclusion, and which introduce under-represented views as well as canonical texts. The successful candidate will be prepared to offer undergraduate classes in at least two periods from the history of Euro-American philosophy: ancient, late-antiquity, medieval, or modern. The ideal candidate will also have the capacity to teach one or more of the following classes or others focused on similar themes: Global Justice, Political Theory, Science and Religion, Philosophy of Religion, or Philosophy of Law. The position includes standard scholarship, service and advising expectations. We are a highly cooperative and supportive department offering teaching and research mentorship to the successful candidate. WCU embraces its role as a regionally engaged university and is designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a community engaged university. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to public engagement through their teaching, service, and scholarship. The position will remain open until filled. Review of files will begin February 1, 2021. Ph.D. in hand required by date of appointment. |
