The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a one-year professorial contractually limited appointment at the level of Sessional Assistant Professor in Philosophy of Cognitive Science to commence July 1, 2021.  The Department of Philosophy is home to York’s Cognitive Science Program.

A PhD in Philosophy is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching, scholarly research and publication, and service. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and a demonstrated capacity to teach multiple courses offered through our Cognitive Science Program, such as Minds, Brains, and Machines (an introduction to cognitive science), Philosophy of Psychology, Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Neuroscience, Animals and the Philosophy of Mind, and Honours Seminar in Cognitive Science.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.  

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments; teaching experience; sample syllabi; pedagogical innovations such as experiential education, opportunities and engagement with students outside the classroom, or the use of technology to enhance learning; and strong letters of reference.
