Job description

Postdoctoral Researcher (ELSI / Neuroethics) – Polygenic Embryo Screening

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher with a strong background or interest in qualitative methods and/or bioethics to work in an NIH-funded study examining the ethical, legal, and social implications of screening and selecting embryos based on likelihood of polygenic conditions (e.g., psychiatric disorders) and traits (e.g., height, intelligence). This is a non-laboratory research position. 

Primary duties and responsibilities:  

  • Assist with interview and survey materials development and data collection
  • Conduct interviews and qualitative data analysis
  • Assist with conceptual and ethical analysis
  • Assist with quantitative data analysis, as able
  • Take the lead and assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication 
  • Take the lead and assist in the preparation of presentations to disseminate the project’s research in local, national, and international meetings
  • Perform other duties based on project needs

Qualifications:  

  • Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD, JD) in philosophy, social sciences (e.g., anthropology, sociology), neuroscience, genetics, health policy, public health, or related field
  • Experience with qualitative data collection and analysis desired; experience with qualitative data analysis programs preferred (e.g., ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA)
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required; must be able to work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines
  • Strong interest in neuroethics, bioethics, health policy, and/or related legal issues
  • Experience with reproductive ethics, disability studies, genetics, and/or bioethics preferred

 The postdoctoral researcher will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz, PhD, JD, and Stacey Pereira, PhD.

Postdoctoral Researcher (Neuroethics) – Pediatric Deep Brain Stimulation

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher with a strong background or interest in qualitative methods and/or bioethics to work in an NIH-funded study (Pediatric Deep Brain Stimulation: Neuroethics and Decision Making; R01MH121371) examining the ethical, legal, and social implications of deep brain stimulation with pediatric patients with treatment-resistant movement or psychiatric disorders. The study also involves an examination of key decision-making factors for clinicians, patients, and caregivers. This is a non-laboratory research position. 

 Primary duties and responsibilities:

 The postdoctoral researcher will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz, PhD, JD, Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby, PhD, and Eric A. Storch, PhD. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to receive mentoring on grant writing.
