Utrecht University is searching for a Professor in Philosophical Ethics. The Chair (1.0 FTE) is part of the Ethics Institute, which is embedded in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. The Ethics Institute is home to ethicists and social and political philosophers, and participates in a wide variety of interdisciplinary contexts, especially university's strategic theme _Institutions for Open Societies_. The Professor will reinforce the coordination and leadership of research and education in Philosophical Ethics.

Qualifications

The Chair of Philosophical Ethics:

  • initiates and stimulates research within the Ethics Institute, the Strategic Theme Institutions for Open Societies, and other relevant contexts at Utrecht University, nationally and internationally;
  • contributes to teaching the Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the Ethics Institute and to the innovation and development of ethics education;
  • contributes to the visibility of ethical reflections in societal debates, and other forms of societal dissemination of research in philosophical ethics;
  • will be available for various administrative activities of the Ethics Institute, the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies, and the Faculty of Humanities.

The successful candidate:

  • is a very experienced Researcher who has manifested themselves internationally with leading publications in philosophical ethics, and who has an extensive international network;
  • is capable of cross-disciplinary cooperation and has demonstrable experience in bringing ethics to bear on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary issues;
  • has ample experience in teaching in philosophical ethics and has the Dutch basic, as well as senior teaching qualifications, or equivalent international expertise;
  • is capable of stimulating reflection on the societal impact of ethical ideas, on the basis of the moral issues elicited by social, political and economic developments;
  • has ample experience with administrative activities, and exemplifies a collaborative and supportive leadership style;
  • has demonstrable experience promoting an organisational culture that pays attention to diversity and social safety issues;
  • has ample experience successfully supervising PhD candidates;
  • has the ability to contribute in a multidisciplinary context to generating both indirect and contract funding projects;
  • speaks Dutch or is willing to learn Dutch within a reasonable period of time.

Offer

We offer a tenured senior position. The appointment is initially at the rank of full professor and that rank will be made permanent after 5 years, conditional upon successful evaluation. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €5,749 and €8,371 (scale H2 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
