Job description

The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) invites applications and nominations of persons to serve as its Executive Director.  APPE welcomes applications by candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including scholars, teachers, professionals, and non-profit administrators. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in ethics, an aptitude for non-profit administration, broad intellectual curiosity, and enthusiasm for convening scholars and practitioners across many fields of practical and professional ethics. 

The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities will be to APPE, but the Director will also provide limited service to DePauw University. Duties at DePauw will vary depending on the candidate’s relevant academic and/or professional background. Someone with an academic background might contribute by teaching 1-2 courses annually; someone with a professional background might teach 1-2 skills-oriented courses as a professor of practice, or contribute to the co-curricular life at DePauw University by conducting a series of workshops.

As part of the Association’s arrangement with DePauw University, the Executive Director will be eligible for all DePauw University employee benefits. This is a non-tenure-track position and salary will be commensurate with experience. The Association’s offices are located at the Prindle Institute for Ethics. The Executive Director will report to the Association’s Executive Board and to the Director of the Prindle Institute for ethics with respect to those functions relevant to DePauw service.

The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics is a comprehensive, international professional association. Its members engage in scholarship, education, and practice in practical and professional ethics (http://appe-ethics.org/).  Through its individual and institutional members, APPE supports and trains future generations of faculty and professionals, works to improve ethical conduct in the workplace, and works to advance public dialogue in ethics, values, and professionalism.  APPE is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in the State of Indiana and is housed at DePauw University’s Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics.

Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $70,000-$75,000 and the person in this position is eligible to receive full health insurance, retirement benefits and GLCA tuition remission (for dependents)from DePauw University along with a relocation allowance.

Essential Functions

  • Working with the APPE board to develop and implement concepts and programs that support APPE’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Planning events and coordinating meetings and conferences, with a focus on increasing APPE member participation and sponsorship revenue 
  • Coordinating and supporting the APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl® activities
  • Developing and delivering membership benefits 
  • Recruitment and retention of dues-paying members
  • Applying for grants and conducting an annual fund-raising campaign
  • Developing new revenue streams independently and/or in conjunction with Prindle Institute for Ethics
  • Producing content for the APPE’s website, developing marketing materials, and maintaining regular communication with membership
  • Representing APPE to the Prindle Institute for Ethics, DePauw University, and other external constituencies
  • Managing APPE’s financial affairs, including preparing budgets and financial reports, and processing sales
  • Ensuring that APPE fulfills all of its legal obligations with respect to maintaining its 501c3 status

  • Ability to track expenditures and maintain and monitor detailed budget records.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS & ABILITIES

 

  • Education: College degree, with a preference for an advanced degree or relevant professional experience.
  • Experience:  Demonstrated aptitude or experience in program and financial management; interest in ethics;  experience in practical or professional ethics is preferred. 
  • Computer Skills:  Proficient computer skills to perform tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, budget tracking, web site maintenance, and e-mail correspondence.
