Job description

Lecturer in Philosophy

Contract: Open ended
Hours: Full time

The Department of Philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to hire an academic specialising in 19th Century European Philosophy. You will join a vibrant philosophy department in the heart of London’s Bloomsbury district, and a university with a unique mission of offering flexible academic programmes to students of all ages primarily through evening study.

Your area of specialism will be: 19th Century European Philosophy.

Your area of competence will also be: Kant, and ideally at least one of: Aesthetics; 20th Century European Philosophy; Political Philosophy.

You will be expected to engage in high-quality research in 19th Century European Philosophy that has the potential to become internationally recognised, and in the longer term world-leading. In addition to teaching in your area of specialism, you will also be expected to teach a Kant module, and ideally also modules in at least one of the following areas: Aesthetics; 20th Century European Philosophy; Political Philosophy.

  • a cover letter
  • a CV, with a list of publications
  • the names and contact details for up to three referees
  • 1-2 pieces of research on a topic relevant to the post

The Department will request references for longlisted candidates only. Such requests will go out to referees on or shortly after June 23. In order to be factored into shortlisting, reference letters would need to reach us by June 29, so applicants are encouraged to check with their letter writers that this time-frame is workable for them.

Presentations and interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place online on July 7, with presentations in the morning and interviews in the afternoon.

Remuneration:

The Lecturer grade of the College's London Pay Scale which is £38,594 rising to £53,342 per annum.

The salary quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
