Job description

The Philosophy Section of the University of Twente in the Netherlands

is looking for an

Assistant professor in Environmental Philosophy

(full-time, tenure track)

with a (future) research emphasis on energy and innovation

The section of Philosophy (PHIL) of the Department of Technology, Policy and Society (TPS) at the University of Twente (UT) is seeking an assistant professor in environmental philosophy, with a particular focus on energy and innovation, and including themes from the philosophy and ethics of science and technology.

The Challenge

We offer an exciting position in a stimulating, international environment. You will develop your own research line, with specific attention to energy innovation and use in the context of urban and rural development for a bio-circular economy. How you give shape to this is up to you. We expect candidates to publish in international refereed journals, present at conferences, apply for external funding and engage in international and interdisciplinary collaboration and in outreach activities.

Your research will be embedded in:

  • The research programme in philosophy and ethics of technology of the philosophy section of UT;
  • The Centre for Energy Innovation (https://www.utwente.nl/en/energy/), which focuses on digitalization of energy systems, battery technology, low-energy datacenters and negative emissions technology;
  • The Sustainable Rurban Innovations platform, a research collaboration of five sections of the TPS department. It focuses on sustainable governance of the emerging interrelatedness between rural and urban areas like energy, health, innovation, knowledge, nature and water.

Examples of research themes that would be of interest are environmental justice, well-being and quality of life, new energy systems and new ways of living, responsible design of energy systems, challenges of globalization, philosophy of the urban-rural divide, epistemological aspects of energy innovation, and others.

You teach courses within your specialization area in the master programme in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS). You also teach introductory courses in different areas of philosophy, for bachelor and master programs in engineering and social science. You will engage in supervision of master’s theses in the PSTS programme and will at some point supervise PhD students.

Your profile

  • A PhD degree in Philosophy, preferably in Environmental Philosophy;
  • Experience in research on energy and/or technology and innovation or a proven interest in focusing on these topics in future research;
  • An excellent publication track record in peer-reviewed international journals;
  • A creative and entrepreneurial mindset and engagement with societal issues;
  • Relevant international experience;
  • Experience in teaching at an internationally accredited university, preferably including experience teaching students in nonphilosophical fields;
  • Excellent communication and networking skills and a proven talent to collaborate in interdisciplinary settings;
  • Proficient in English (C2 level);
  • In possession of a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), or willingness to acquire it.

We expect candidates to move to the Netherlands, to the region where the university is located or to a region from which a daily commute is feasible.

Are you up for the challenge to improve the world with your research as well as teaching? Then apply now!

Our offer

We offer a fulltime position for four years with prospects for a permanent position. Breakdown in duties is 40% research – 50% teaching – 10% administration for the first two years. Research time drops to 30% after two years, but can be increased through successful grant applications. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues in which internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda.

The starting salary, depending on experience, ranges from €3.746 to €5.826 gross per month (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). The UT offers additional attractive employment conditions (8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, solid pension scheme, sabbatical leave, professional and personal development programs, etc.). International applicants are likely to qualify for a low 30% tax regime.

Starting date:  between September 1st, 2021 and February 1st, 2022 (negotiable).

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our university. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment.
