Job description

The Center for Population-Level Bioethics (CPLB) at Rutgers University has an open rank faculty opening in ethics and population health. We are open to candidates with a wide range of empirical or normative scholarly interests that are salient to population-level bioethics including but not limited to research ethics with a population focus, health measurement, health disparities, ethics of population health, global justice, and environmental justice. We seek a creative faculty member who is motivated to advance the field of population-level bioethics through scholarship, service, and policy development; has the potential to develop and sustain an extramurally funded research program; contribute actively to their home school’s teaching mission using modern pedagogical techniques; and mentor graduate students and/or students in the health professions. The ideal candidate is an individual with an interdisciplinarily inclined program of research that is informed by the latest findings in disciplines relevant to the candidate’s interests—epidemiology, statistics, medicine, clinical trial methodology, implementation science, economics, law, sociology, or any field that can inform new and interesting things to say about macro-level bioethics.

The faculty member will be primarily appointed to the Center for Population-Level Bioethics with a joint appointment at one of Rutgers’ schools. The faculty member will also be appointed to a Term Endowed Chair that will be held by the Chairholder for a period of five years, with the possibility of reappointment.

An attractive recruitment package will include a competitive salary and start-up funds. The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree or equivalent, a solid track record of scholarship, commensurate with the desired rank, and either a history of receiving extramural support or willingness to develop and expand a grant-seeking practice.

The Center for Population-Level Bioethics (CPLB) is dedicated to the study of macro-level bioethical dilemmas: those that arise outside the clinical encounter, at the level of the population, the state, the country, or the globe. Questions of interest range from the theoretical to the applied, for example how to conceptualize, measure and evaluate disease severity or health inequalities; how to prioritize resources between disease areas, rural and urban patients, and age cohorts or generations; the acceptability of paternalistic health promotion measures; and many others. Our approach emphasizes collaboration and interdisciplinarity, and seeks to inform and be informed by other fields of inquiry such as general ethics and philosophy, health policy, and health economics. We welcome innovative questions and methods and value clear presentation of ideas, potentially using formal tools.

CPLB is part of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), New Jersey’s academic health center, which takes an integrated approach to educating students, providing clinical care, and conducting research—all with the goal of improving human health. RBHS oversees eight schools, a behavioral health network, and multi-disciplinary centers and 10 institutes. CPLB is creating research partnerships within RBHS, within the rest of Rutgers University, nationally, and internationally.

CPLB’s offices are located in the center of New Brunswick, about an hour away from New York city, at the beautiful Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. Rutgers is a leading national research university and New Jersey’s preeminent public institution of higher education. Chartered in 1776 as Queen’s College, it is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the United States and a member of the AAU, the Big Ten, and the CIC. Rutgers’s New Brunswick campus is located at the center of the Boston to Washington DC corridor, with access to New York, Philadelphia, and the Atlantic Ocean beaches within an hour.
