ABOUT THE INSTITUTE ON ETHICS & POLICY FOR INNOVATION

The Institute on Ethics & Policy for Innovation (IEPI), based in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University, is focused on identifying and addressing ethical challenges, ethics-related risk, and policy gaps that have the potential to undermine the impact of life-saving technologies and interventions in Global Health and Development. The Institute operates on a demand-driven consultation model to support researchers, funders, sponsors, policymakers, and other stakeholders in global health navigate through ethical issues that impact work across the innovation lifecycle. The ethics consultation service is supported by programs of research in four core pillars: data ethics & governance, translational science, infectious disease management and emerging technologies.

IEPI is internationally recognized as a trusted advisor that engages in ethics and policy discourse in a thoughtful, inclusive manner, and often serve as neutral brokers of dialogue between stakeholders. IEPI is currently supported by a major grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and is responsible for delivering an ethics program of research and consultation service that supports the Foundation’s Global Health division. IEPI is also supported by a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

THE OPPORTUNITY

IEPI is seeking a facultty member who holds a Ph.D in ethics, public health or global health to serve in a faculty appointment as our Assistant Director. This faculty appointment at the Assistant/Associate level, has a critical leadership role directing and contributing to the execution of IEPI's three main streams of activity: consulting, research, and education. This requires the individual to be a leading thinker in order to make scholarly contributions, execute on research and consulting deliverables, advise on key trends and practical issues in the global health landscape, and direct and lead research projects. IEPI is at the forefront of real-time, evolving global health priorities, which requires an individual who can adapt to changing priorities and lead as a change champion. This requires making instinctive adjustments to ensure alignment with the goals and objectives of our partners.

The individual will work with the Director, Dr. Claudia Emerson, to execute IEPI's existing strategic framework to further advance the achievement of the Institute`s mission and vision. The individual will execute on the strategic priorities through refining existing programs of research and orienting IEPI for future success through expanding our research programs and range of initiatives offered. This requires having a pulse on the programmatic opportunities and leading trends to propel IEPI into the forefront of ethics consulting and education. The successful incumbent will have experience transitioning between ‘big picture’ strategic thinking and specific programmatic deliverables in order to build effective partnerships, align operational resources, and mobilize a team of professional staff.

As a leading centre of applied ethics research, IEPI is committed to training the next generation of scholars needed to respond to the challenges of globalization and health inequity. The individual will contribute to the development of pedagogical tools and resources to support this mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D in ethics, public health or global health, and have a proven track record and success in:

  •     A senior leadership and/or program management role
  •     Engaging and collaborating with senior academic and health system leaders
  •     Ethics and/or global health research
  •     Managing financial and human resources

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic and interdisciplinary environment and have a drive to take initiative, independently define problems and solve them with creativity and resourcefulness.

This position requires some national and international travel, and therefore a valid passport is required.
