Job description |
The department of philosophy at Lingnan University, which is one of the strongest in analytic philosophy in Asia, is interested in supporting applications for the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). The department is especially strong in aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, philosophical logic, and philosophy of science, and also has several members with expertise in other areas such as Chinese philosophy, epistemology, meta-ethics, and philosophy of mind. In the near future, the department will host a new research center focusing on catastrophic risk. In 2022-23, each Fellowship awardee will be provided with an annual stipend of HK$322,800 (approximately US$41,400) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,500 (approximately US$1,730) per year for a period up to three years. Also, the first-year tuition fee of HKPFS awardees will be waived (HK$42,100 for the 2021-22 academic year). For an awardee with a normative study period of 4 years, the University will offer the same level of fellowship and conference/research-related travel allowance for their fourth year of study. Those with first class undergraduate degrees and/or (predicted) distinctions in their MA/MPhil degrees are especially encouraged to apply. Over the past four years, a good number of applicants we have supported have secured these fellowships. You can find out more about Lingnan's philosophy department at http://www.ln.edu.hk/philoso/, and the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship scheme at http://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/index.html. Applicants interested in pursuing postgraduate studies (in this case, PhD and MPhil) at our department may also apply to the University directly from 1 November 2021 to 21 January 2022. These applications will not go through the government-funding agency (UGC) but will be evaluated exclusively by our department. Normally, full-time PhD students will be awarded Postgraduate Studentships. In 2021-22, the full monthly stipend is HK$18,090 (amount subject to annual review). We also have a popular research-based 2-year MPhil Philosophy programme. Applicants may apply for admission to our MPhil programmes directly from 1 November 2021 to 21 January 2022. Full-time MPhil students will also be awarded Postgraduate Studentships. In 2021-22, the full monthly stipend is HK$17,830 (amount subject to annual review). The department is more likely to accept research proposals in areas where there is existing faculty expertise and interest. Prospective applicants are advised to visit the department website for more information on faculty interests and research areas. |
