Job description |
The Philosophy Department at Tufts seeks a philosopher whose scholarship—which could be primarily in (meta)ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, the history of philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, or any other field of philosophical research—bears significantly on philosophical questions, problems, and puzzles having to do with the development and use of new technologies. The ideal candidate will enhance and develop the department’s technology-related philosophy curriculum, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, will increase the department’s technology-related presence at Tufts, and will serve as the department’s point person for a new Philosophy MA program in Human-Robot Interaction, which will be offered in collaboration with the School of Engineering, and/or other collaborations with departments and programs at Tufts—particularly at the School of Engineering and a new Artificial Intelligence Institute that is forthcoming at Tufts—on philosophical issues being raised by recent advancements in artificial intelligence, emerging media, and other new technologies. Four courses/year. Usual non-teaching duties. PhD in Philosophy by the start date of employment. The Department expects high-quality research in philosophy and strong publication record from all of its tenure-stream members. The department expects all of its members to be passionate, conscientious, innovative, and effective teachers, at both the undergraduate and the graduate level. The department prides itself on the close mentoring by all of its members of its undergraduate majors and minors, and of its MA students. Members of the department are expected to be active participants in faculty self-government. The Department is committed to further increasing the diversity of its faculty, its student population, and its staff, and to maintaining a welcoming and encouraging environment for faculty, students, and staff of all backgrounds. The Department regularly offers a good number of courses that focus on issues of racial and social (in)justice, as well as courses on non-Western Philosophy. All faculty are committed to bringing into their courses voices and perspectives that have traditionally been under-represented in philosophy, and to creating a classroom environment that allows students of all backgrounds to feel comfortable and encouraged, and to develop their own philosophical voices. Applications must include a letter of interest, CV, official transcript from a PhD program, a writing sample, and an e-mail address and phone number at which the candidate may be reached. Evidence of teaching experience and expertise welcome. Three confidential letters of recommendation should be uploaded directly by recommenders to Interfolio. Applications should be submitted to https://apply.interfolio.com/94603. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2021, and continue until the position is filled. Preliminary Interviews will be scheduled for December, 2021. To be assured of full consideration applications must be complete by November 1, 2021. Questions about the position may be directed to Avner Baz, the Chair of the Department, or to Jaouad Elkamouss, the Department’s Administrator. Tufts University, founded in 1852, prioritizes quality teaching, highly competitive basic and applied research, and a commitment to active citizenship locally, regionally, and globally. Tufts University also prides itself on creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community. Current and prospective employees of the university are expected to have and continuously develop skill in, and disposition for, positively engaging with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students. |
