POSITION SUMMARY:

Summary: The selected applicant will join the faculty who carry a long and proud tradition of highly acclaimed teaching and research in core areas of philosophy. We are seeking candidates with a commitment to excellence in scholarly research, teaching, and professional service. The selected individual will have ethics of computing, data, or information as their area of specialization.

This position is one of three new faculty positions that are part of a cluster hire in ethics of computing, data, and information. Other units participating in the cluster are the departments of Computer Science, the Information School, and the Holtz Center for Science, Technology & Society. Applicants should demonstrate an interest and ability to do collaborative, cross-disciplinary work with other cluster members on important ethical questions in computing, data, or information.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Duties: The selected candidate will teach four classes per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate level; advise graduate students; hold office hours; grade exams; conduct scholarly research; perform university and professional service, as appropriate.

DEGREE AND AREA OF SPECIALIZATION:

Ph.D. or the equivalent in Philosophy required prior to start of appointment.
AREA OF SPECIALIZATION: Ethics of computing, data, or information
AREA OF COMPETENCE: Open

MINIMUM YEARS AND TYPE OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE:

Assistant professor candidates must show evidence of outstanding teaching and research potential and must be willing to teach upper and lower-level courses on a regular basis.

Associate and full professor candidates must, in addition to the above, have a distinguished record of philosophical research.

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is searching for a philosopher specializing in ethics of computing, data, or information.

The department seeks candidates whose approach to teaching, scholarship, and outreach will attract a broad and diverse range of students to the program in philosophy.
