The Kennedy Institute of Ethics

The Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) at Georgetown University is seeking an outstanding scholar to fill the Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. Chair in Bioethics.

The KIE is an academic ethics institute with an historical focus on bioethics, broadly conceived. Founded in 1971 with generous funding from the Joseph P Kennedy Jr Foundation, its mission is to promote original research and actively contribute to policy development and leadership, and also to provide programs for Georgetown University and the broader community.

The Institute has included founders of the field as well as next-generation leaders, whose expertise includes bioethical theory, health care reform, death and dying, research ethics, data privacy, reproductive ethics, disability studies, organ transplantation, and public health ethics. The Institute is a renowned resource for the University, the policy world and the global bioethics community, and is a proud leader of innovation and creativity in the field.

The KIE is home to Ethics Lab, a center for creative ethics education; the world-famous Bioethics Research Library; the highly-praised Intensive Bioethics Course, held in the summer for practitioners and professionals; and two leading journals: the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal and Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics.

One of the founding gifts to Georgetown from the Joseph P Kennedy Jr Foundation was the Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. Chair in Bioethics. It was established to generate and transmit new knowledge concerning the ethical aspects of medical research and practice and to study the interface between biology and ethics with particular concern for persons with developmental intellectual disability.
