Job description

Xavier University is part of the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts and is strongly committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. These values are central to our mission. We strive for a climate of respect and inclusiveness that welcomes and supports members from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, is committed unreservedly to open and free inquiry, and deliberately seeks out multiple perspectives.

Xavier’s urban location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University 20 years in a row among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities.

AOS/AOC: Open, but applicants must have a broad knowledge of the history of philosophy and emphasize the close reading of primary texts. We are looking for an excellent teacher who can teach widely in our core and major courses, and we are particularly interested in applicants working on marginalized philosophers and traditions.  The department currently has strengths in political philosophy, ancient philosophy, Kant and German idealism, and phenomenology.

Required Qualifications:  Ph.D. in philosophy (or a closely-related discipline) is required by the start of the position. An established record of teaching excellence and evidence of scholarly potential is expected.  The successful candidate will also be able to engage diverse groups of students in learning opportunities.

Xavier is committed to a diverse and inclusive environment; we welcome a broad spectrum of candidates, and particularly invite applications from women, ethnic and racial minorities, and other individuals who are under-represented in the profession.

Position Responsibilities: The position is full time; tenure-track and research-active tenured faculty at Xavier typically teach a 3-3 load. In our department, the load usually includes 2 sections of a core course (either PHIL 100 or PHIL 200) and 1 upper-division elective or First Year Seminar. Research and service are expected and supported.

Applications: Initial applications should include a cover letter, CV, writing sample, and teaching portfolio that includes evidence of teaching excellence, a statement addressing diversity and inclusion, and sample syllabi demonstrating experience in or preparation for teaching primary texts.  Your cover letter should also address how you would approach one of our two core courses (Phil 100, Ethics as Intro to Philosophy, or Phil 200, Philosophical Perspectives).  Finalists will be asked to provide graduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation and syllabi for Phil 100, Phil 200 and one elective.  For further information about our courses, including the required common texts for our core courses, please visit our departmental website:  www.xavier.edu/philosophy-department

Applications should be submitted to Xavier University's website.  To ensure consideration, applications must be received by November 15, 2021. Preliminary interviews will be conducted by Zoom the week of December 13, 2021.  For further information, please contact the Chair, Dr. Michelle Brady, by email: [email protected]

Please Note: only 5 attachments can be uploaded during the application process; consolidate documents when necessary.

Xavier University is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination on the basis of race, skin color, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability.

Xavier University will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 3, 2022.  Newly hired employees will be required to provide vaccination status upon on-boarding.  Vaccine exemptions may be granted for medical or religious reasons.
