Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 8, 2022. The successful candidate would have area of specialization in the Philosophy of Mind and ideally one or more of the following areas of competence: Philosophy of Neuroscience, Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, Metaphysics, Epistemology or the Philosophy of Science. Instructional responsibilities include a 3/2 course load in areas of specialization/competence and other areas of instructor expertise. The Department of Philosophy hosts a BA and Minor and supports significant involvement in the University’s general electives requirements as well as in various interdisciplinary degrees, certificates and initiatives in collaboration with other programs in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters as well as with other colleges in the university.

The selected candidate would contribute to a growing area of expertise in the Department most notably anchored by its William F. Dietrich Distinguished Professor of Philosophy Dr. Susan Schneider who leads the recently launched the Center for the Future Mind (https://www.fau.edu/future-mind/) in collaboration with FAU’s Brain Institute and in partnership with the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems, the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences, and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will work to further enrich this growing area of Departmental focus and to contribute to efforts at the Center for the Future Mind including possible engagement with the Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Lab and potential use of the Rubin and Cindy Gruber Sandbox, an artificial intelligence lab housed in the main library.

Applicants with the capacity to expand connections to these and other entities including the College of Science, College of Nursing, College of Medicine, and College of Engineering and Computer Science are particularly encouraged to apply. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will identity with and conduct scholarship/research/instruction aligned with one or more of the University Research Pillars which include: Neuroscience, Healthy Aging, Environmental and Ocean Sciences, Sensing and Smart Systems and Big Data.

Depending on candidate expertise, successful candidates will be eligible for appointment to one or more of the following:

  • The FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute (I-BRAIN, https://www.fau.edu/ibrain). I-BRAIN supports neuroscience research, education and community engagement programs across multiple FAU campuses and colleges. Faculty members of I-BRAIN qualify for pilot grants, graduate student fellowships, research technology support, and subsidized use of I-BRAIN Core facilities including the FAU Cell Imaging Core and Neurobehavior Core. I-BRAIN faculty pursue research across the full spectrum of neuroscience, ranging from genetic and molecular neuroscience, cellular and circuit analysis of brain function, behavioral studies in models and man, cognitive and computational neuroscience, and disease mechanism and treatment studies.
  • Florida Atlantic University’s Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE, http://isense.fau.edu). I-SENSE is a university-wide innovation hub, leading fundamental research in sensing, computing, communication, artificial intelligence, and cryptography, with disciplinary-specific applications to environmental science, health and behavior, urban planning and design, infrastructure systems, and other application areas. The I-SENSE mission is to catalyze a culture of research excellence in sensing, smart systems, and their applications; to develop, demonstrate, and operate solutions with high societal impact; and to attract and support future generations of interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Philosophy from an accredited institution. The successful candidate must have the Ph.D. completed by the start of the Fall 2022 semester.  The selected applicant must provide official transcripts scanned into an electronic format. Degrees from outside the United States must be validated by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts).
