Job description

Description: The Center for Bioethics at the Indiana University School of Medicine offers a two-year fellowship focused on ethics of precision health and health information.

Founded in 2001, the IU Center for Bioethics is a gathering place for discussion, education, research, and collaboration in bioethics and related fields. Based at the IU School of Medicine, faculty from multiple schools at IU lead these efforts, guiding healthcare providers and researchers in their work and helping society confront important questions about health, science, and technology. Our faculty investigators carry out interdisciplinary, grant-funded research in bioethics and related areas, including patient decision-making, genetics, precision health, health information, and research ethics. We are also home to the Bioethics and Subject Advocacy Program (BSAP) of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute (ICTSI). Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities include:Conduct qualitative and/ or quantitative research involving ethical issues related to precision medicine and/ or health information (60% effort).  This effort:
    • Will include, during the first year, helping lead an NIH-funded project studying the return of pharmacogenomics test results to patients participating in a larger clinical trial; 
    • May include projects initiated by the post-doctoral fellow with approval of the Director of the IU Center for Bioethics;
    • May include projects currently being planned or underway at the IUCB regarding ethics and implementation of: learning healthcare systems, genetics, and biobank consent and governance.
  • Participate in other research projects and service activities at the IU Center for Bioethics, including as part of the BSAP program of the Indiana CTSI and the Indiana University Precision Health Initiative ( 20% effort).
  • Contribute to the academic life of the IU Center for Bioethics, including project planning, informal and occasional undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and the administration of related work at the Center (20%)

Position Qualifications:

  • Recent PhD in bioethics, philosophy, health policy, public health or a related field, or MD with a strong background and interest in bioethics.
  • Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative social research methods.
  • Accomplished academic research and writing skills.

Salary Range: $47,484 - $58,560 based on experience and number of years post-PhD.
