Job description

Position Summary

The University of Dayton, Department of Teacher Education is seeking a dynamic faculty member with a specialization in Social Foundations of Education at the rank of assistant professor to begin August 16, 2022.

The successful candidate will teach three undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Foundations of Education per semester, including philosophy of education and contemporary perspectives on schools and schooling. The candidate will teach both face-to-face and online; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate education majors; maintain an ongoing program of research; and provide service to the department, university and broader community. Presence on campus for face-to-face teaching and mentoring of students is an essential function of the position.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • ABD nearing completion in Social Foundations of Education, Philosophy of Education, or in Philosophy with specialization related to education;
  • Commitment to using your expertise in the field to help students understand contemporary educational policies and practices and develop practical wisdom for action that seeks equity, justice, and peace;
  • Expressed willingness to engage with Marianist educational values that build community across diversity, promote inclusive excellence, and contribute to the common good;
  • Promise of excellence in (1) research in the field of Foundations of Education or Philosophy of Education and (2) teaching and developing courses and programming in Foundations of Education at the college level; and
  • Excellent written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Social Foundations of Education, Philosophy of Education, or Philosophy with specialization related to education;
  • Multiple perspectives on foundations of education, such as sociological, political, and/or historical;
  • Successful experience integrating resources from the Catholic intellectual tradition into course development and instruction;
  • Record of peer-reviewed scholarly activity relevant to your field of study;
  • Effective oral communication skills;
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills; and
  • Successful experience in any or all of the following within the US system of higher education: teaching culturally and linguistically diverse communities; employing active and inclusive learning strategies to foster and maintain student engagement; or using instructional technology within both -face-to-face and online teaching.
