Description

The Department of Philosophy at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track position in artificial intelligence & ethical theory with research interests in digital cultures, history and philosophy of computing, and emerging technologies. The successful candidate will be able to teach a course in the Intelligence and the Arts and Engineering (IAE) program entitled “Introduction to Digital Intelligence," an innovative project-based course that brings together education in the humanities and computer science. The candidate must have a proven interest in philosophy of mind, and topics at the intersection of philosophy and technology, for example in ethics and technology; have experience with cross-disciplinary approaches and be open to team teaching and collaborative course development.

Experience in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and curriculum development should be highlighted in the application. 2/2 teaching load, both graduate and undergraduate courses. The successful candidate will have a record that indicates strong research potential and demonstrates experience in teaching philosophy. Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching (4 courses per year, i.e., 2 per semester), dissertation and thesis supervision, and standard nonteaching duties. Required Qualifications: Research accomplishments, prospects, and ability to teach courses in the fields of artificial intelligence & ethical theory.

Preferred Qualifications: Research accomplishments, prospects, and ability to teach courses in the fields of philosophy of mind, and at the important area of the intersection of philosophy and technology in such areas as digital cultures, history and philosophy of computing, and emerging technologies.
