Job description

Phillips Academy seeks a talented, interdisciplinary-minded Visiting Scholar in Ethics and Technology with interests in philosophy, computer science, and design for a two-year position exploring the intersections of ethics and technology with our students and faculty.  The two-year appointment will begin in September of 2022.  Minimum requirements include demonstrated success in the teaching at the secondary or university level and a demonstrated commitment to writing and public-facing scholarship in the intersection between the fields of technology and ethics.

The role has three main components: teaching, collaboration, and writing.

Teaching
Responsibilities include teaching two classes per term.  The topics of these courses will lie at the intersections of computer science, technology, and ethics.  The department chair will determine specific assignments in consideration of both the Academy’s needs and the expertise of the candidate.  There will likely also be opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching with faculty from other parts of campus.

Collaboration
The successful candidate will support faculty projects currently developed through the Tang Institute.  In particular, this person would work closely with the ethi{CS} project, an undertaking led by Andover faculty and supported by the Tang Institute that endeavors to authentically embed ethical inquiry into computer science and STEM classes.  Similarly, this role provides support to student projects with a focus in these areas.

Writing
The successful candidate will contribute to the Tang Institute’s role as a thought leader in the larger educational community.  Through the use of traditional and online publishing platforms, the successful candidate will contribute to a robust learning community of teachers interested in exploring ethics, computer science, and robotics and other areas within the technology sector.  We seek candidates with a demonstrated interest in public-facing writing who would use this position to advance a significant writing project.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.  Please visit our application portal to submit a cover letter (addressed to Mr. Jeffrey C. Domina, Dean of Faculty, Phillips Academy), résumé, and two letters of reference.

Phillips Academy is an intentionally diverse and inclusive residential community.  Although the visiting scholar position is not a residential faculty position, please address directly in your cover letter your experience and interest in working in an intentionally diverse and inclusive school community.  We welcome applications from individuals who identify with groups typically underrepresented in independent school settings.

Phillips Academy is an equal opportunity employer.  Any offers of employment will be contingent upon successful CORI/SORI and fingerprinting background checks as well as authorization to work in the United States.
