Postdoctoral Fellow in the Philosophy of Biology (EXPIRED)

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Guelph seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work for one year on an interdisciplinary project funded by Genome Canada. The project explores publics perceptions and trust in gene-editing (GE) technologies, with an emphasis on “welfare enhancing” applications in the dairy and beef industries.

The Fellow will collaborate with a research team composed of philosophers, economists, animal welfare scientists, veterinarians, and historians based at the University of Guelph and the University of British Columbia. The Fellow will also engage with stakeholders from the dairy and beef industries who are partnered with the project.

Specific activities include:

• conducting research in at least one of the following areas (broadly construed): philosophy of biology, agricultural ethics, environmental philosophy, philosophy of genomics, philosophy of biotechnology, values/trust in science.

• authoring or coauthoring at least one philosophical article on gene-editing and/or welfare-enhancing technologies.

• contributing to a white paper tailored to industry stakeholders outlining philosophical issues in gene-editing technology.

• presenting research findings at workshops/conferences.

• participating in quarterly meetings with research team members.

Salary: $50,000 (CAD) plus benefits, $2,000 travel stipend, $500 relocation expenses.
